In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this have more
positive or negative effects on the society?
Due to improved diet and advanced medical treatment, people nowadays live longer
than any generation before. In many countries across the world, the trend towards
more senior citizens and fewer children is proceeding at an accelerated pace. This
continued expansion of aged population has started causing widespread public worries.
One major concern is that an ageing society may lead to the shrink of a productive
workforce, since elderly people either lack creative and innovative minds or have retrieved
from the working world. Some people even think that increasing aged population combined
with low birth rate might cause labor shortage in the long term. However, in line
with a longer life span, people’s working lives have also been extended. Many
workers nowadays choose to retire when they approach 65 or even work beyond the
retirement age. More importantly, with specialized knowledge and professional expertise
obtained throughout decadeslong working lives, older employees serve as a source of
expert personnel in various occupations.
On the positive side, the elderly also contribute to the happiness and stability of a family.
It is a common practice in my country that old people attend to their offspring, who are
either too young to look after themselves or too busy to take care of their own children. Obviously,
proper guidance and attendance from the older generation make it more possible for the youth
to focus on making a better living. In the macro scale, the aging population creates
a fresh need for some professions, such as nursing, medical care and insurance, which
makes job opportunities and helps achieve greater economic gains.
I think the fear that a society will suffer from too many old people is unreasonable.
Living longer is a shared goal of every single individual and increased life
expectancy is an inescapable trend in today’s world. What really deserves concern
is how to improve the medical care and social security system of a country, in order
to have a healthy and energetic elderly population.
