An educational visit

Describe an educational visit you have taken part in.

You should say:

where you went

what you saw

what you learnt during the visit

and explain how you felt when you went there.

When it comes to an educational visit I made, I want to talk about the visit I made to the Terra-Cotta Warriors outside Xi’an city, which is a sensational tourist attraction in China.

I visited the place 2 years ago with my parents, and I learned a lot about the Emperor Qin Shi Huang, and why he decided to duplicate (=reproduce) his army.

The city of Xi’an has gained fame since the time 30 years ago when a farmer dug a hole and found tons of different statues buried under his field. It turned out to be the tomb of one of our famous Emperors-- Qin Shi Huang, who was the first to unite the Chinese Kingdom and played a very important role in Chinese history.

Before he passed away, this emperor decided to be buried with a whole army of soldiers in order to protect himself in his afterlife and to make sure that he would have people to rule over. He was afraid of what could happen to him after death. He called for thousands of peasants (=farmers) to carve an impressive number of statues, representing soldiers and horses. They were all placed in lines all around his tomb.

The terracotta figures are life-sized. They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle in accordance with rank. Most of them originally held real weapons such as spears, swords, or crossbows. The figures were also originally painted with bright pigments, variously colored in pink, red, green, blue, black, brown, white and lilac. The colored lacquer finish上漆, individual facial features, and actual weapons used in producing these figures created a realistic appearance.

Many archeologists (=historians) have done research there to explore the secrets of the Qin Dynasty. They have dug many statues out of the dirt, but not everything because they’re worried that pollution and high temperatures will destroy the sculptures.

The visit really impressed me a lot not only because of the visit itself, but also because of the things I learned from the visit. This place reveals the splendor (= beauty + grandeur) of past dynasties, as well as the beauty of our Chinese imperial heritage (= heritage from our emperors). It’s really worth a visit!

{背景知識}

A public event you attended

Describe a public event you attended.

You should say:

what this public event you attended was

where you attended it

when you attended it

and explain why this event was special to you.

Speaking of a public event, I want to talk about the annual Weifang International Kite Festival I attended two years ago. Known as the kite capital of the world, Weifang holds the international kite festival during April 20 to April 25 every year in Shandong Province, attracting lots of kite flyers and millions of enthusiasts worldwide.

Before the festival had started, there was an opening ceremony, which included a lot of traditional artistic performances and fabulous fireworks. The venue was a huge soccer stadium that seated about 80,000 people, including about 40,000 plastic chairs in the stadium floor! The kite flyers from 40 different countries were each escorted across the stage in front of the crowd, and each escort carried a large sign showing the kite flyer's home country.

During the opening ceremony at the stadium, there was a fabulous show on stage that consisted of 10,000 dancers, acrobats, drummers, and also some of Chinese popular singers. Besides, colorful traditional activities such as dragon-boat racing, fishing contest, and lantern show added a special flavor to the whole festival.

And of course, there was nothing cooler than the exciting kite-flying performances. The unlimited imagination created kites of all shapes and sizes. Each colorful kite was an outstanding works of intelligence and brilliant conception. You could see centipede with many sections and legs多足多節(jié)的蜈蚣flying high, colorful butterflies dancing up and down and dragon shuttling in the sky. The view was spectacular!

Till now, Weifang International Kite Festival has been held successfully for 25 years in a row. The annual kite festival offers an exposition of kite arts and crafts to millions of people throughout the world. It is also a platform for trade and commercial development and a great opportunity for culture express.
